Holistic, Biological Dentistry Near University City, CA

More than a few folks think that dentistry and medicine don’t have much of anything to do with each other. In fact, it’s a false division, perpetuated more by tradition than science. Over and again, science has shown that oral and whole-body health are closely linked.

According to the great German physician and medical researcher Dr. Reinhold Voll, up to 90% of all health problems may be linked to conditions in the mouth.

Even conventional dentistry now recognizes the connection, such as the proven link between gum disease and other inflammatory conditions – heart disease, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Most dentists also recognize that poor oral health can greatly interfere with a person’s emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

So What Makes Biological Dentistry So Different?

Biological dentistry is holistic in nature. The teeth, gums, and mouth are not viewed in isolation. They are understood to be part of a dynamic whole – one that includes physical, energetic, and spiritual aspects. When you see a biological dentist, you are seen as a whole person, body, mind, and spirit.

To address this multidimensionality, biological dentistry blends the best of 21st-century dental practice with traditional healing wisdom. We rely on leading-edge techniques and tools, including lasers, dental ozone, and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin). At the same time, we incorporate practices like nutrition, acupuncture, neural therapy, homeopathy, light therapies, and more to support the best outcomes from dental treatments of all kinds.

Education and prevention are key to what we do. Education lets you make the most informed decisions possible regarding your dental care. It also helps you understand the steps you can take to keep your teeth, gums, and jaws healthy for a lifetime.

Biological dentistry is minimally invasive, sparing the teeth any undue trauma that could hasten their demise. When more invasive treatments such as fillings, crowns, or implants are called for, we use only biocompatible materials, never toxic metals. The same goes for orthodontic devices, oral appliances, and dentures (partial or full).

Biological dentistry is fluoride-free, mercury-free, and mercury-safe. Not only do we never place “silver” amalgam fillings; when a patient chooses to have them removed, we follow strict safety protocols to protect the health of the patient, ourselves, and our environment alike. When a patient has existing amalgam fillings, we never polish them or treat them in ways that accelerate the release of mercury vapor, for this neurotoxin is most dangerous when inhaled.

While mercury fillings are one of the most common dental factors that have been found to fuel various chronic health problems, there are others, including residual infection in root canals and jawbone osteonecrosis, often referred to as “cavitations.” Because of this, we are well-versed in the needs of patients with longstanding health challenges in which oral conditions may play a role. We routinely collaborate with integrative physicians, naturopaths, chiropractors, osteopaths, and other healers, coordinating care in our mutual patients’ healing journeys.

Above all, we view each and every patient as an individual with agency, not a passive patient. A biological dentist takes the time to really get to know you – not just your dental and medical history, but you, personally, as well as your needs, goals, and values. A biological dentist doesn’t dictate your care. Instead, we present you with choices and information about the pros and cons of each, so you can make health decisions that make the most sense for you and your family.
